The Importance of Lubricants in Farm Equipment Maintenance

Posted: March 23, 2026

Choosing the right lubrication for your farm or ranch is essential.

Maintaining your farm or ranch equipment can feel like a full-time job all on its own. Between planting, harvesting, feeding livestock and managing day-to-day operations, there’s rarely a slow season. But with a little planning, you can prevent the kind of major service issues that lead to costly downtime. One of the most important steps you can take is making sure your equipment receives proper lubrication.

The right products, applied consistently, help protect your machinery from wear, harsh weather and heavy workloads — keeping your operation running smoothly. Valley Farmers Supply proudly provides customers in Custer and the surrounding Montana region with high-quality lubricants for a wide range of farm vehicles and machinery.

What Farm Equipment Needs Lubricant?

Nearly every piece of equipment on your property relies on lubrication to perform at its best, including:

• All-terrain vehicles
• Boom handlers
• Chainsaws
• Combines
• Forklifts
• Loaders
• Tractors

Lubrication plays a critical role in preventing metal-on-metal damage. Components such as bearings, steering systems, ball joints, power takeoff shafts and other pivot points should be greased regularly. These parts endure constant motion, pressure, dirt exposure and changing temperatures. Without proper lubrication, friction increases, parts wear down faster and unexpected breakdowns become much more likely.

Benefits of Proper Lubrication for Your Agricultural Operation

Effective lubrication delivers several essential advantages that directly impact productivity and profitability.

• Increased equipment efficiency and performance. High-quality lubricants are engineered to improve reliability and boost performance. Agricultural equipment often operates in extreme temperatures and dusty conditions, carrying heavy loads for long hours. Premium lubricants are designed to provide exceptional wear protection, stave off oxidation and corrosion, prevent contamination and maintain energy efficiency even in severe conditions.
• Extended equipment life. Farming equipment represents a significant investment. Heavy-duty oils, greases and transmission fluids formulated specifically for agriculture offer strong resistance to water, corrosion, heavy pressure and contamination. The result: you’ll extend the service life of your tractors, combines, loaders, and more.
• Lower maintenance and ownership costs. Preventive lubrication minimizes breakdowns and reduces costly repairs. While premium products may be a slightly higher upfront investment, they pay off many times over with durability and protective qualities that help lower the total cost of ownership over time.
• Greater yields and profitability. When your equipment operates reliably throughout the season, your entire operation benefits. Reduced downtime, smooth performance and dependable machinery support higher productivity. That can ultimately translate into stronger yields and improved profitability.
