In 1876, the U.S. Army placed a fort where the Tongue River flowed into the Yellowstone River. The military encampment grew and soon would be led by General Nelson Miles. When the first post office opened there, the town became known as Miles City. The area was a popular grazing land for thousands of cattle to fatten up before being loaded on trains for Chicago. Miles City was officially incorporated in 1887. Some notable residents have included the prolific TV director Jeff Meyer, the Mayan scholar Merle Greene Robertson, and Emily M. Danforth, the author of “The Miseducation of Cameron Post.”
